Hybrid (biology), an offspring resulting from cross-breeding
One thing I really like is a Hybrid lure. I think I am going to try and make an effort to get some current makers to do some for me as i have found it a bit hard to get the old retired guys to do them. The bringing together of 2 lure makers to create a blend of styles is pretty cool to me. I have a couple of rods in the fire for the future but so far have come up with these 3 special ones.
My Brett Campbell carved and Paul Knellor Painted Goodooga which both have signed for me. This was made, and painted approx 21yrs ago. Signed in 2010.
My Peter Newell Carved and Brett Campbell painted Kadaitcha. Carved in the 2000's at some stage by peter and painted by Brett in 2010 at my request.
And my most recent, Rob Gaden carved RMG Tempter (a rare lure in itself) and Paul Kneller painted. Not sure when carved but was painted Paul believes in 1995 when he made the Deception Kadaitcha's, Megaboomers and a run of Mulwala 95 Shrimps and Cherax lures and he lived in Sydney still. This one he believes was done for a guy A.Budd

Oh Alistair .... this addiction of your could get very expensive - also have a pair of big old Brett Campbell carved, Peter Newell painted lures as well as the Kneller / Whitmore hybrid.
Ahhhh .... there must be more 100% pure Deceptions out there so I can move these half baked hybrids |

Please refrain from giving it to Alistair you guys.He is a sensitive ,nice fellow and does not deserve that.
And besides your barely leaving a window open for me to rip it into him with my FNQ pickups of Newells.

Must say Alistair, it was very hard to let that big Tempter go .... it's a lure that is bigger than most people would realise and Paul's paintwork is damn near perfect on it

Alistair .... here are the rest of my hybrids
- The large yellow Pacemaker was made by Brett Campbell and painted by Peter Newell. It came out of Rob Gadens collection and is dated approximately 20 yrs old. It's a big lure measuring some 190mm. - The second is one of 2 original smaller Goodoogas made by Brett Campbell and painted by Peter Newell. The lure came directly from Brett and dates back into the 80's I am told. It is 140mm long. - The bibless lure is a Manns Manniac which was painted by Paul Kneller - an international hybrid !! - The cutlet bone shaped Whitmore Shrimp was a body given by Paul Kneller to Ray Whitmore who painted it. I'd suspect it dates back to 1993 |

Some more Hybrids to add to the collection. Some old ones and I have been lucky enough to have a few makers happy to swap some lures around and bring back to life a couple of oldies. Still have some of these to get the second signature on and a few more undercoated to be sent on for painting to add to these. Terry Marshall made Tom Barratt painted "WildCat"
Terry Marshall made Richard Lee painted "cant remember model name"
Tom Barratt made Richard Lee painted "Wilbarra Fatty"
Carl Grist made Tom Barratt -top, Richard Lee - bottom painted "CL4,s" These were old very very beat up off ebay lures that have been brought back to new through some top work by both these guys.
Dave Killalea made Richard Lee's painted "Jew Baits"
Dave Killalea made Richard Lee's painted " Model name please?"
Made by Paul Kneller Painted by Ray Whitmore "cutlet bone shrimp"
Older Terry Marshall made and painted by Tom Barratt around 2008

Alistair, I can see now your keeness on getting "mix & match" hybrid lures together.A great idea that should bring some odd? mixtures into being. The long 3 hook KL is his"6"Barra Bait", of which i still have some blanks to complete. I call mine "Big Barra Trap". Many thanks for showing all these, much enjoyed. Please keep us all updated as things progress.Cheers Richard.

Thanks Richard. That Terry Marshall and Gidgee blow me away and both you and Tom did great jobs on those CL4's which had been chewed to buggery. Very nice patterns indeed. Passing on lures between makers to personalize was much more common yrs ago and it interests me to see what patterns you guys make on a lure that was not made by you. It can really change the look of a lure and I think the original makers like to see them once finished as well. Thanks for these ones and the extra and I will post up pics of your lures once I work out where they will go for a paintjob (the popper will be "gidgeedized").

I have been waiting for the sun to come out, (maybe should have waited a little longer), to take some pics of this lure that Gavin, (OCD Lures), has repainted for me. This CL3 made by Carl, was in a bad state, and I sent it down with a few other lures to Gavin. It's come back to life in a big way now. I will leave it up to Gavin to tell of how this paint effect has been achieved. It is stunning in full sun. Allan

I have some photo's of the CL3 I redone for Allan, taken before the weather moved in. Here is a pic of the lure when I got it,
and here are some after shots, The paint effect is pretty simple, yellow mica metalic (with heavy fleck) as a base colour with a special blend sprayed through a piece of woven nylon. Spraying through the nylon at a slight distance gives a slight 3D effect and the special blend consists of midnight black with a ridiculous amount of gold sparkle added. The amount of gold added makes the black appear brown/bronze and it really shines in the sunlight. Even these pics don't reveal the true effect. |

Dempster Lures re painted by Gary Akers "AK Lures"
"Some people may be not agree by restoring these old lures, and I will admit I was in two minds whether to take the leap. What made the decision easier was that these had very rusty bibs, very flaking paint (which scrapped off quite easily), original paint had been touched up very poorly and so on. So their condition was quite poor (compared to the rest of my collection). Some were worse than others. One needs a whole new bib...but having some trouble getting the broken bib out.
I love George's lures and I am totally appreciative of the very talented lure maker who painted these for me. They all look fantastic and are now considered to be a hybrid. These are the only ones of their kind and I rate them very highly in my collection of timbers. I love the red one the best! Here are some pics of the early stages of restoration: " steiny |

Here are a few Westy Moller minnows in White Beech, repainted by Seaweed. These were traded/swapped at the Lure Expo. Have a few Westy's in original livery left incluing a couple of nudes, if anyone is interested?
