hi just thought id share few pics of sum my homemade lures from late , nothing special standard design for barra made with jig saw belt sander and touch up cans auto. Have changed over from red cedar to pine. Just standard pine used for skirt board etc. Pine has been great as it is slow rising as opposed to cedar rapid rise, perfect for barra. as you can see though with the pine my undercoat does not last it cracks and peels of after minimal usage, one day on the water this never happened in past with the cedar .
Any tips as to why undercoat sticks like glue to cedar but not pine , its is aouto putty undercoat in one. Any way I have made up couple new ones with just normal timber undercoat to see if I have any more luck.
So far my biggest barra has been just over 900 if get this paint right on the pine models I hope to try beat that this build up .

They certainly look the goods and sure work well! I think the problem with the paint not adhering is the pine is too "green" so to speak! Some pines are OK if they are aged but a lot are quite sappy.  If you can find some silky oak, that will work as it's denser than red cedar and will work the way you want it to.  You may have to seal the lures before undercoating. I use Everdure two pack and it works well and soaks into the lure. Wait 24 hrs then a light sand before applying undercoat.
