    Posted: 20 Oct 2014 at 9:07am
Quite a few years ago now I was guided on Lake Glenbawn for bass and golden perch. The guide who took me out swore by different colours for different light and water conditions. He recommended silver and fluro coloured lures for bright days/clear water conditions and gold and red colours for low light/discoloured water conditions. After a couple of successful trips with this guide, I accepted what he had to say and went about populating an impoundment box based on those simple colour choices. This has all worked out ok but I wondered what others may have to say about his light-water clarity-colour of lure theory. Regards, Ken.

Years ago this was touted in the general fishing media as the general rule of thumb, but I have seen the contrary to this so many times.

Agreed. You definitely need one of every colour in the range. Two, if you're organised enough to keep a spare in reserve in the event of a bust off.

It's not my fault I need multiple tackle boxes dear, I'm just being organised.

Here we go again!
Fish dont see the world through human eyes, there are so many unknowns, like how many extra colors they see than us, or how many less.....

what ever the angler is comfortable with is the way to go.

That is so true, and different fish species identify different colours and variations depending upon the amount of cones and different lengths to the cones in their eyeballs.

spot on

You can have an irresistable lure in a color that will get a 100% bite from a fish, but it wont work unless you put it in front of a fish!

This will always be a topic with heaps of different thoughts/ideas but after fishing with lures for a long time now on some days it does not matter what colour you throw at the fish as they hit every lure but it is the tough days that lure colour/contrast/size matters the most.
In certain situations bright lures work better on bright/clear days as well as dull lures on overcast days but also water clarity also influences colour so bright lures work better in clear water and dull/drab colours work better in dirty water.

But the deeper you travel with a lure certain colours are not visible to fish and it is more contrast/action/noise etc...

Always remember the best lure for any conditions is the one you have tied to the end of your line.
