Hi, Was wondering what sort of pen was used for signatures etc. on lures?
At what stage is the info put on the lure ie. before clear or epoxy finish? Have tried CD markers and 'Sharpie' and other types and get runs or fades to nothing. Is it also true that Moller lure stripes were put on with some type of marking pen? Thanks for any information |

Barry, I too have tried all manner of pens, but the best results have come using a Posca brand pen, one of thier 'glass markers' it seems to contain a more paint based fluid rather than an ink based which is the type found in most Sharpie, Texta etc.
Using these pens, I have been able to apply single and 2 pack clear normally after a couple of hours. I got a selection of colours including white off evilbay pretty cheap. All the texts I have perused say a normal ink based marker will do, but the trick is to allow 12hours for the carrier solvent to dry out, and apply a mist coat of clear, allow to dry overnight then apply further clear as normal. Hope this helps |

My favourite pen has been a "Millenium" by ZIG. have been using this one for 10 yrs at least. and can brush or spray over it within 10 mins without running, Also the Artline Ergoline is pretty good but I put a fine mist spray on it at least 10 minutes before full gloss.
With the Moller stripes, I believe they were brushed on with a small artists brush. The black/yellow Dempsters were striped with a Nikko type marker.

Yes Barry you need to pick through them and test, or just try the ones suggested as these guys have had years testing these--
Sometimes I'm amazed seeing nice lures with w big flash signatures and no sealer over it--just get a 'kneenex' with a few drops of metho on it and you can make it disappear in a flash, also sometimes I wonder how many lures get "conveniently" signed by a new owner, nothing to stop them. After trying heaps of different markers (none of the above), if I do sign one these days I use a 3B lead pencil, signed before the final coat. Pete |

Hi Barry.
I'm very new to lure making so I haven't tried too many methods of signing, however I am on the same page as Pete - a pencil has worked very well for me too. Not too light (high into the H side) that you have to press down hard into the paintwork and timber, and not too heavy (higher into the B side) as it will crumble and go on too thick/rough. I have put a pin sharp edge on a HB and it is amazing how fine and neat you can write on the lure and it hasn't run yet. I've been writing directly on the paint before the clear coating. Cheers, Danny. |

As to your other query, Eric used enamel paints to apply his stripes and spots, he often had help from family, especially his grandson Bruce. Some Moller lookalikes, have used texta stripes on Tiger style lures.
