I have mainly been looking and not fishing while the winds are up. Some of the wharf regulars need my companyWink, not that I stir them up .... oh no not meLOLLOLLOL

But I do get to throw a lure around every now and again between the moments of mischief and mayhem, fun and frivolity. One one such occasion I scored this undersized spotty mackerel and had a bigger one roll under the Seaweed Barra lure I was using. Sorry about the poor photo.

I may get another fish or two in before I go to Pormpuraaw on Monday.

It's been blowing a gale for the past 3 weeks - since I went to Pormpuraaw. Winds today were averaging around 36 kph with gusts up to 53 kph. It starts dropping off tomorrow at around 30 to 40 kph with Friday looking really good and continueing for 4 or 5 days under 20 kph. The exact same day I start my drive to Yeppoon for 2 weeks. A mate has a holiday house rented just a few doors up from Hooknose so LOOK OUT STEVE I'M COMING AT YALOL. Oh and Ray Murphy- expect a visitation or three from me and my mates (we'll bring our own beerThumbs Up), hope you have some more jointed lures made mateBig smile

A solo trip on the reef today. A very calm day but with a high tide around mid morning, most of the morning was very quiet until the run in the water started.

I ended up scoring a 68 cm green jobfish on a lure given to me by Hooknose. It was repainted by Ray Murphy and Hooknose thinks it may have been a Munt lure. I got this fish at Osterlund Reef.

I then went to Egret Reef chasing giant trevally. After about 5 missed strikes, including one where the mouth was so big it could have swallowed a 2 litre coke bottle, I finally scored a 68 cm fish, and then a 75 cm fish on one of Wal Muffett's Wedgetail lures.

68 cm giant trevally

75 cm giant trevally

I also had about 4 follows by big coral trout, but they were not committed enough to aggressively hit the lure.

Had company in town for the annual barra (and mangrove jack) fishing competition. Bill Caracatsanoudis, Cam Cupitt (Headland Lures) with his sons Phil and Will came up from Innisfail, all willing to catch the barra with the secret weight to win a $20,000 Quintrex / Yamaha package.

First day of the comp (last Friday) I took them to a secret mangrove jack spot. One undersized jack by Cam only. Lots of follows and short strikes, and Phil had a huge barra roll under his lure (this spot also holds some very big barra).

Next day I took them to a secret spot north of Cooktown. Quite a few barra were caught but only 7 barra were of legal size. Phil - 1 barra, Will - 1 barra, Cam -2 barra and Bill- 3 barra. Cam and Bill dropped 5 huge barra between them.

Phil caught the first legal barra using one of his father's lures.

My first 2 barra of the day using Cam's lures

Will with his legal barra using Cam's lures.

Cam cleaning the fish. All fish weighed in must be gilled and gutted

Bill stayed on for a day out on the reef. We hooked into a few mack tuna with only 1 landed by Bill due to the trebles snapping on the brand new metal slugs. A change of hooks is still to happen.

We had schools of fish coming up around us. When we saw that they were fusiliers, we changed over to blue and yellow lures. 20 metres into the troll and Bill hooked up to this barracuda.

I then found a nice hump rising up 18 metres in 30 metres of water. We dropped some baits and scored 5 nice coral trout. They went off the bite as soon as I dropped a huge trout. We tried casting poppers around the reef  for giant trevally, but as it was high tide with lots of depth over the reef, I wasn't too hopeful. We only had one follow off the GTs.

Interesting day fishing today. An hour on the wharf throwing a stick bait around and I got done by a shark. Another stick bait got smashed into the air by about a metre but no hook up.

Later in the day saw Wal and I at Archer Point throwing stick baits again. I got smashed but again no hook up that I think may have been a giant trevally, and followed by a coral trout. Wal had a small hit and then a massive spanish mackerel becomes airborne and leaps 2 metres into the air with his lure in it's mouth spitting it out during it's jump.

Like I said an interesting day but no fish landed.

Reef fish closure this week until after Friday. Took a bloke out trolling for mackerel (only one hit) with a spot of giant trevally chasing. Mike caught his first ever giant trevally at spot on 1 metre using a Headland Lure popper, then lost it to another one as it rubbed him off on a bommie.

I scored a 91 cm black giant trevally on an Illusion Lure and was hit a couple of more times. As I fought my fish in, I saw that it had my line wrapped around it's tail. A quick bit of rod work - tip under the water and a bit of luck as the fish swam in the right direction untangled the line from it's tail. After I released the fish I hand to cut off 2 metres of damaged line.

Mike's first ever GT and biggest ever fish

Apparently the males are black - looks very impressive.

Went out for a mackerel troll for a few hours this morning. Not a single hit but I did see a big spanish mackerel leap about 4 metres in the air like a rocket with a small tuna about 2 kilos in it's mouth. Seeing these things leap is spectacular but when you see it pretty close, it is awesome.

Back out again today as the winds were 'supposed to" get down to 5 kilometres per hour - HA. Winds dropped to about 15 kph before rising to above 25 kph again. The plan was to go to the eastern end of Osterlund Reef chasing the (much) bigger giant trevally , mackerel and tunas - specifically looking for dog tooth tuna.

Due to the stronger then expected winds we only got as far as the western end of Osterlund Reef before chasing the GTs as the tide drops.

My tactic /  thoughts on chasing GTs on the reef is low tide and target them as they hunt around the bommies. If there is too much water over the reefs then they also hunt on top of them which spreads them right out making them harder to target.

Anyway, the captures, well we both missed some good hits off the GTs including one BIG black brute that hit my lure, took it for a swim before spitting it out. I believe this same fish had a go at Wal's lure just a few minutes later. Wal ended up with a nice mack tuna before having that same lure bitten off just a little while later (maybe by a big mackerel?). He also scored a double hook up on spanish mackerel, he often trolls 2 lines while I'm kept to one while driving the boat - both landed. A 90 cm (tail length) GT on 3.8 kilo line was landed and he lost 2 more lures to GTs.

Me - well one 60 cm spangled emperor that was released in the water due to it being one of the reef fin fish no take species until after tomorrow. This was taken on a stick bait made by Billy Stringer's friend - Gary Ransom

Wal's mack tuna

Wal's 2 spanish mackerel

Wal's 90 cm giant trevally on 3.8 kilo line

My 60 cm spangled emperor, this stick bait was also hit by A big GT

Had a bit of a look around today at a few places. Bad tides today and the next few days with little water movement with some high winds and very choppy water in exposed areas. I did have a few casts around Archer Point and lost a popper given to me by C.R.A.F.T. Lures to try. Bummer because I reckon this would have got me a giant trevally in the right conditions. It had already been hit once with a gouged tooth mark in it's tail.

A look around the wharf and I saw 3 big barramundi, with one easily a metre long, cruising around a pylon. Earlier in the day there was a 50cm plus coral trout poking around the wharf as well.

The top right quarter of the photo has the big barra in it- too bad it is now closed season
