Hello Aussies, didn't want to hijack wire plier thread, I've made plenty smallish twisted wire eye's using cordless drill and bent nail method with two ends of wire in vice. I was wondering with you guy's using them for bigger species, what is the maximum diameter stainless wire you can make a neat twist with using this method ? And assuming your using softer wire, which grade and type do you prefer ? Cheers, peter

ive twisted around 2mm too but just using a drill bit and steelfixers nips.I have used heavier (3mm or so) on some really big lures but the eyes were'nt twisted just bent around a drill bit then notched with steelfixers nips.you could probably twist 3mm galvanised fencing wire not sure how you'd go twisting stainless that thick .the gal would be ok if you were only fishing freshwater

Gave it a go today Blinky with some 0.9 s/s wire for some smaller lures and some
1.6mm s/s for some 175mm xmas gifts so I’m sure when I get some 1.2mm s/s wire it will twist up fine. Thanks. |

And with regards to diameter, I found the final diameter to be perfectly proportioned to the lure it was going to go into.

Thanks blinky and puglee,I'll get a hold of some 316 and give it a shot. I reckon for what I have in mind 1.5 mm should be o.k so hopefully that will twist neatly. Are you using softer annealed wire in the thicker diameters?

If you can't find softer wire you can anneal stainless to make it easier to twist by heating to a dull red with a propane torch and just let it air cool. I don't think you lose any tensile strength but it is a whole lot easier to form.

I don't use annealed wire as the formed eye will pull out of shape on a decent fish......

Thanks tbolt and blinky,I can get 316 annealed or not, so standard 316 is still soft enough to produce a neat twist blinky ?

This short vid shows 2 mm 316L being twisted. Twisted 2 mm
It is imperative that your drill is top notch when twisting these big wires. I’ve burnt out a couple of “Cheap Charlie’s”..... |

Yer, depends on how soft it is. Some of the heavy SS trace wire is way too hard to bend without annealing but as you guys are talking about 1.6 - 2mm wire my post is prolly irrelevant Cheers. Cliff

Cheers guy's, the video is exactly the method I've used with thinner wire blinky. Will be using a decent dewalt cordless which I've used previously, plenty torque......glider
