Lures by - Mike Shelton – Inverell.
Maker of – New England Lures (Timber Lures First designed in 1988 but not actually sold commercially until 2005) • Mudraker (Inspired by Aussie 200 & Kadaitcha) • Mudrat (Inspired by Arbogast Mudbug) • Mudler - Typha Lures (1988 – 2001) • Tempest ( Molded lure ) - Kingfisher Lures ( 2001 today) • Mantis ( Timber before moving to plastic ) Mike Shelter was born in Coffs Harbour in 1970 and from age 5 grew up in Inverell. He was introduced to fishing by his father, Don who himself grew up in Bellingen and was best mates with fishing legend and writer Vic McCristal. These 2, along with Col Graeme, who was heavily into eastern cod influenced a young Mike in his early lure making days. At age 14 Mike remembers making his first lures to target the local cod population and it was not long after that he started to sell his lures to local people. It was around 1988 that ‘Typha Lures’ was born and lures under this name were first sold through Inverell Fishing and Hunting Outdoor World owned by Frank Gorkroger of Predatek lures fame. Mike now owns this store himself and as well as supplying fishing , camping and hunting equipment makes Kingfisher lures on site assisted by his wife and daughter. Mike also made other lures not sold commercially and these designs later became New England lures. The Mudraker was inspired by lures such as the Aussie 200 and Kadaitcha with the Mudrat inspired by the American Arbogast Mudbug. Mike still makes some New England lures which are all timber but these are generally only sold through his Inverell based shop Mudraker, Mudrat and surface Mudler 1999 saw Mike move into making lures full time and also around this time he started making a surface lure known as the “Mantis” this design is still made today in a molded plastic with internal rattles. Early timber designs were jointed with a curved ‘U’ then ‘V’ before moving onto a more chip resistant straight cut. Less than 1000 timber kingfisher Mantis lures were made before the move into plastic which continues today. The Kingfisher Mantis lure is a very popular lure with sizes made to target fish from Bass to Barra with Murray Cod the main focus fish for these lures. |

This is such a good way to learn about certain lures - from the mouth of someone passionate about that particular maker's designs and the timelines they fall into. Thanks for sharing Alistair.
Cheers, Danny. |
