I've been thinking about starting this topic for a while. Member input will hopefully help greatly towards my own recent doubts regarding specific lure action for certain native species. I'm really enjoying designing very small ultra deep, high frequency tight actioned lures for freshwater species. I am finding the action on these lures more effective so far than the standard slower wide sway/wobble that is so often associated with a classic native style lure. I realise this is a very broad topic with nearly endless fishing situations so I'll try and hone it in with a few questions

What is your favourite lure action (and lure if you have one) trolling for:
-Cod
-Golden Perch
-Bass

What is your favourite lure action (and lure if you have one) casting for:
-Cod
-Golden Perch
-Bass

Let's see how this goes as a start. Responses will help with my puzzle a thus will be much appreciated

Cheers,

Danny.

Danny

your not the only one who has begun to question the old wisdom that's been passed down for years. I can only comment on perch and cod, not yet having the chance to fish much for bass.

Over the last few summers I've gone away from big action surface lures to Shane Murphy's sliders with great success, and I've found them to be more useful in some ways and a lot more fun to fish as I'm creating the action rather than relying on the bib for the action. Plus, after a full day on the water my arm isn't aching from the massive drag either. I want to apply the same idea to sub-surface this summer and have a crack at making some pike style gliders to throw at fallen trees etc. I've also increased both the speed of retrieve and the speed that I cover water (i.e. 2 or 3 casts at a snag before moving on rather than 10 or 15) with no reduction in catch yet

In a similar vein, I've had good success using tight action lures polaroiding for perch on lake edges. I vividly remember one huge perch I spotted at Googong that resisted all efforts with lure and fly until I savagely ripped a 7cm suspending rapala minnow in short bursts across it's nose. My go to lure for many years were the Poes stable which are much tighter in action than most aussie made lures and have had some good success fishing these in fast bursts as well.

Recently there have been articles on FF that talked of using fast running shallow(er) minnows and smaller lures for targeting cod and I've caught a lot of cod up to 80cm on small 30-50mm surface flies that are very subtle in action.

Don't do a lot of trolling for either cod or perch, so can't really comment.

Steve

Danny, weight of numbers is the answer and historically most of our native lures were slower in frequency and they have worked damn well over the years.

Horses for courses however - in recent years we have definitely had superior results on small high frequency Mini Tonk's on Bass and Yella's when trolling impoundments and have always benchmarked then against tradition - statistically proven in our opinion, but that is all it is, our opinion.

Illustrative Mini Tonk below .... just need a beats per second count LOL

Cheers

Rob

Thanks guys.

Steve, that is great information and makes perfect sense to me. I was wondering how long it would take before someone mentioned Shane Murphy's lures and it was the very next post. Awesome I've also found the same as you in regards to numerous casts at the same snag - if I don't get at least a follow within 3-5 casts I will almost never pull a fish from that spot.

Rob that Mini Tonk is a standout lure and although I haven't had the chance to fish it properly for natives it has well and truly proven itself on the trout at Jindabyne. I would choose it's high frequency over the wider sways of flatfish etc any day.

Thanks Mick - there's a few spots around here that I've been meaning to throw a blade or two around in for ages. What retrieval styles are your favourite?

Cheers,

Danny.

depending on the structure your fishing, heavy timbered areas drop to the bottom and lift up a rod length and let it flutter back down. sometimes a fast lift to really get it vibrating. fishing the eadge of weed beds is good for casting as far as possible and retrieving as fast as needed to feel that vibration, or even a wind and rip motion. surprising how those tiny hooks on small vibes hold on......mick

We used to use Rebel Deep Humpbacks years ago when they were still available. They had a really tight hard action, nothing remotely like a wide sway, and at times they would outfish any other lure we had.
Wish I could still get them.

I think its just a matter of putting the lure in the right spot at the right time....no doubt at times some things may help intice a reaction from the fish, i live in an area where bass, yellas, silvers, catfish and cod are the main species, the cod in our area are a protected species...therefore targetting is illegal.
So most lures i use are small 40 to 50mm....the idea behind this was to eliminate bycatch of cod....certainly not your standard cod lures....
but ive found that smaller tighter action lures catch everything from fresh to salt....and the cod love them too.
I use them for all fishing scenarios....salt and fresh....small fish...big fish.
at the end of the day...if the lure is placed or swam past a fish and it wants to strike...it will strike almost anything thats put in its zone....that could be a wide action lure or tight action lure.
generally the reason most people do well on one or the other is because they mostly use...one...or the other.
just my thoughts.

What is your favourite lure action (and lure if you have one) trolling for:

-Cod – Medium action – Garra Tera

-Golden Perch -  Tight Action – Jensen Hotlips

-Bass – Tight action – Whitmore cray but as I wont use them (shakes head at Lurenut) then Gidgee cray

What is your favourite lure action (and lure if you have one) casting for:

-Cod – Medium action – My own lures.

-Golden Perch -  Don’t fish for them but if so medium tight – My own lures

-Bass – Tight action -  Kokoda G-vibe

Thanks for your input Mick, much appreciated.

Dave I've never fished a humpback - I reckon if you used the skill you've show in your recent posts you could recreate something similar for sure

Nicho, good to see you're wary of the cod in your area. I think this is how I started noticing the effectiveness of the smaller tighter actioned lures as it's all I was using to avoid catching cod as best I could. And it's like you said - if it's all you use and you have success on it then of course you'll keep using it.

Good stuff Alistair - thorough and just what I was after. Interesting that you don't have wide actioned lures for your cod selections. I am the same now too. I would also not fish a Whitmore cray, Rob

Cheers,

Danny.

I don't use them now as I try and stick with timber lures but credit where due as they were always a standout lure for Yellowbelly in the dams for me.

i know of a very good cod fisherman who uses jackall doozers like you would if you were fishing for tuna/gts/tailor. winds as fast as he can with a rip and pause action. caught more cod than anyone else i know. some LL members would know who i'm talking about.....mick

Last Glenlyon comp I went for a river fish with Bryan & Kev and was showing them that sometimes a really quick retrieve with a diver can bring on a strike when you have just pulled a slower lure past the same spot a few times for nothing. I would not suggest it all the time but worth adding to your retrieve styles. The big downside of doing this though is that when you get snagged, your really get snagged good. Bryan mentioned that one of the Qld lure makers fished like this often.

I had not caught a thing on a Hotlips, people around me (in the same boats / canoes/ neighbouring kayaks) were catching fish with them but not me. I got so sick of wasting my time with them, I went back to my, then, favourites of small stumpies, stingers, wasps, dolls eye boomers, Manns and Cordell Big Os.
