Hi guys.....wet rainy day here....not much to do so cleaning up the shed.....came across a few old lures that were the first lures i ever made in 1998/99.....Now I know Im just a backyard hacker, but thought some might be interested to see where it all started for me.
I Sent a few of these to my old man in nsw for fishing chaffey dam for cod/yellas.....from memory he got a few fish. I gave a dozen away to mates, and kept half a dozen for myself......Ive still got a few of these, and can still remember the first fish caught on each one......estuary cod/flathead/bass These were made from a piece of pine purchased at the hardware......it was still sappy, i can remember sanding them and the sap getting stickier as it warmed up from the friction..... I drew the shapes onto the pine and then put the timber in a vice and hand cut shape with a hacksaw.....then sanded by hand into the shape i wanted.......bib slot cut with hacksaw also. Then i put the lure upside down in vice and used the hacksaw to cut a slot from tail to nose along centre of lure to half the depth of lure.....this to accomodate the wire. then the bib was glued in place using (wait for it!!!) 5 min araldite!!! and left overnight to dry. The bibs were hand cut out of an old shop sign and a few made from black plastic from an 20lt bottle. Next day the wire was twisted at the rear end, bent in a u shape in the centre.....the towpoint was poked through a hole in the bib then twisted back up to the nose of the lure......then the slot was filled with araldite and the wire was pushed into the slot using a knife point....it was a tight fit, once in place glue was wiped off and left to dry. painted with spray cans and a stick for the graphics These lures are rough as guts, but over the years caught me endless fish and have given me memories I will never forget. I can remember going down to the local boat ramp in tewantin to see if they swam......first cast a nice flatty hit my lure i was beside myself!!!!!!!!!......next lure I got snagged on a rock, finally got it free and bang a nice estuary cod hit it!....I was hooked from then. The top 3 I salvaged from my old mans tacklebox....the bottom 3 are ones I managed to keep. The name Nichos Maulers was written on those lures even back then....The big green one was made to go deep in the dam for cod....named THE CHAFFEY DAM EXPRESS(what was i thinking) This lure below caught me countless fish, and was particulary good on flathead....for years it was painted either silver or black/green....if i fished fresh it got black green.....if salt it got hit with chrome,it must have a hundred layers on it by now......bloody rough but it produced time after time, I used to call it flattymagnet. And have a few more cut out ready to experiment with. I can remember catching and boating 3 trevally all caught at the same time on the same cast, I thought i had a good fish on, I was stoked when i got them to the boat and seen 3 fish hanging off my lure, ive got it on video, and can remember saying 'THESE lures are going into production" soon as i get home That was in 2000, and i never made another lure till i stumbled across this site a couple of years ago. This lure below I called tweety because of the eyes.......This is without a doubt the best lure I made....it has the perfect action that attracts fish, and over the years accounted for more fish than ive ever caught on any other lure........ fresh-bass/cod/yellas/silvers/catfish ..salt-queenfish(to 15kg) trevally/flathead/estuary cod/ catfish/bream/jack/hairtail.....its a trooper. I caught a nice cod last year on it.....a few casts later I caught a bass....a few more casts a big yella, the yella got me in the snags, it was then i thought about how much i liked this lure, I managed to get the yella out, and keep my original lure.....since then old tweety has been retired. Everything is wrong with these first lures if you were to take things seriously......the bibs are out of shape, nothing is to scale, 5 min araldite used.....sappy pine used.....no undercoat.....but just goes to show you can still have fun without taking it too serious......make do with what youve got and just have a go.....although all the wrong things were done in the making of these.....they have been treated rough for 15 years and are still strong as day they were built. The lures below are some I make regulary now, and all stem back to the original lure i made TWEETY. The new ones are called the BASSFUKA.... and TOPFUKA(paddler)....and are just a tidied up version of the old original.......and like old tweety they seem to do it for me even on the tough days. I have stuck with hand painting with a brush.......I know it doesnt give the professional look, but i enjoy it and find it relaxing, so for now, Im sticking with it. The FASSBUKA....is a jointed version of the BASSFUKA (name play) and is made in 3 sizes to suit bass/cod.......made this lure specifically for my local area, I needed a lure that could be used in thick timber as a surface lure, and made to dive where possible amongst the timber......it can be walked on the surface, leaving a nice V wake as its tail goes side to side..... used sub surface or made to dive deeper....I put it through serious testing and it was working great for me....so i gave one to Craig from qld best angler and he has been using it with great success all year, ive got it back in my shed and just gave it a makeover for him as its was showing serious wear from all the cod. Just thought it was interesting to see these lures have all evolved from the old original made 15 years back. Thanks for looking......I just thought id post this as future reference for myself and kids mainly, allways good sometimes to look back and see where things come from.....and this site offers that opportunity.(thanks TONY) Id like to thank all the great members on here that offered me genuine open advice on how to improve the overall outcome, it has been greatly appreciated......and the positive support from fellow learners has kept me striving to improve......cheers guys Jas |

Great start there Nicho ,I am sure that most of us have a few old ones like these lurking in the bowels of the shed somewhere.
It is good to know that they catch fish then as they do now. Regards Darcy.

Jas,
Great to see your early stuff, great but how good would they have been with dots and spots. When did they come into play. Remember painting my early stuff with artex and hobbytex paint and funny enough worked great and some have stood the test of time. Well done and great article |

thanks for taking the time to comment guys.......
chris.....those lures were carved with a knife from an old broom handle, funny looking things, from memory i had trouble getting them to swim, and you gave me some advice on towpoints etc, which made all the difference....cheers. P.j.....it would be good to see makers do a thread re. the first lures they made, would be interesting reading, from novices to old hands would be great. thanks for looking. Jas
