Now that I have your undivided attention, let me share with you a stunning nude Viper that I received today off Mr Murphy.
Back at Expo 2, I passed onto Shane (Mencho and Darby too) a section of a very old (100y +) window sash from a pub at Wagga. The grain density and colour variations show the timbers age and Shane has worked his magic to highlight them to the max. The 3 photos were taken at the same time with slightly differing angles. Even my neighbours enjoyed it. Many thanks Mr Viper - you da man wadey |

Someone said something about it getting wet - fishing it . It is now permanently and very happily resting on a glass shelf in a nice clean and very DRY environment.. wadey |

Simply Stunning Work Shane. Love the older Timbers.
Question????? the older timbers seem to have a nicer grain than the younger timbers of today. Could someone explain to me why or was it just the piece of Timber. i.e. is older better

Manny, sorry I didn't get back to your question in this thread,It's possibly an answer that Brad would more appropriately give in more technical terminology .

in simple terms.......OLD GROWTH TIMBER..... back in the day when the ringing of axes blended with bellowing oxen and the cracking of wagoneers whips...the Cedar was all old, ancient even, and was pretty much ripped out of the easy access areas.
By the time the cedar getters were forced to go deeper into the back country, the Govt started declaring the areas as state forests and such. Since then any cedar available on the market is plantation grown or resides on private property and is relatively 'new growth'. Young timber is usually lighter and the grain not as spectacular as it is allowed to grow easy, no fighting for nutrients and light, so it grows faster and straighter and is harvested before it reaches it's true magnificence. |
