Tonight I bought 2 lures on Ebay. A week ago I placed a bid which was successful. You may well say there is nothing unusual about that. The unusual thing about those lures that I immediately noticed was they were 2 that I had made to fish for salmon at Victor Harbour some 30 yrs (or thereabouts) ago. I swapped them for two other homemade lures at an ANSA convention. They should be home again next weekwhich will be satisfying.

Its a good story I swapped them with a fellow at an ANSA convention at Victor Harbour and according to subsequent discussion they have hung in his lure cupboard ever since. I was nervous about getting them but I am lucky no one else wanted them. He couldn't remember my name so when I contacted him after winning the auction I explained the situation and he has offered to return them to me at only postage and paypal costs . I am very appreciative as I don't have many of my early lures.

It's a bit like a wife Bill---you never appreciate them until they are gone - I have a huge gap in my history, great looking lures and I bet you DO appreciate their significance in your lure making history.

Bill, I to saw these and recognized them as yours, reason being you gave me two old ones like these, but blue, one minnow and one popper, on one of your trips to Darwin visiting my place.
If you'd like them back as they are early, let me know, as I have a couple of your recent ones already.
You didn't tell me at the time they were all you had left .
Regards, Tony.

Well the lures arrived today and I am very pleased. The minnow is one of the best shapes I have made so will have to set about replicating it.

Nice to hear stories like that from the ebay world. Too many of the ones where people are just trying to screw others over for $$$. Nice lures Bill

Hi Bill and all. I am a very new reader of this forum and cannot believe the lure nuts that are out there. As Bill will attest I have been making lures for many years but I haven't carved one for a long while. Too busy with old motorbikes. I still have boxes of my old blanks and stuff which I might get back to finishing one day. I used cedar, huon pine close grain balsa, and any lightweight timber I could get my hands on. Made a couple of huge swayback minnows years ago but they are still in primer. Want to finish them off Bill? I "graduated" to moulding them using an epoxy solution with micro balloons in the upper half for flotation. I'm out of that industry now so have no access to that stuff any more. Carving is best anyway.
I do a bit of fly stuff and occasionally still use lures especially soft plastics. (Do I hear howls of derision). So that's me fellas. Nice to read your stuff. Brian. |
