    Posted: 27 May 2012 at 11:21pm
Hi Guys, as mentioned elsewhere, I am making a display of timber species suitable for Lure making.
With the help of members Ted (Lofty) and Chris (Puglee) who supplied a few species I don't have, I am up to 20 species so far. I am carving each timber into a Prowler shape as it suited all the samples I have.

From left to right....
African Tulip Tree Spathodea campaulata
Camphor Laurel Cinnamomum camphora
Brown Beech/Bollywood Litsea leefeana
Chinese Elm Ulmus parvifolia
Hairy Oak Allocasuarina inophloia
Huon Pine Lagarostrobos franklinii
Jacaranda Jacaranda mimosifolia
Kalantis Toona calantas
Kauri Pine Agathis australis
Kauvala/New Guinea Basswood  Endospermum macrophyllum
Mackay Cedar Paraserianthes toona
Mango Mangifera indica
Mangrove Acanthaceae spp.
Mulberry Morus spp.
Prickly Ash/White Beefwood Orites excelsa
Red Cedar Toona ciliata
Rosewood Dysoxylum fraserianum
Silky Oak Grevillea robusta
White Beech Gmelina leichhardtii
Yellow Cedar Rhodosphaera rhodanthema

I would like to get hold of some of the following if anybody has a small piece 80mm x 20mmsq

White Cedar
Cheesewood
or any other everyday timbers that you guys have found suitable for carving.

Brad

Brad, saw Bruce Moller (Eric's grandson) at the weekend markets. Told me he had some King Billy Pine for me.
He's going away, will be back on June 10th. If you want a piece, I'll then send down, should still give you plenty of time before Expo. Let me know if interested.
Regards, Seaweed.

Bryan, hmmmm a few of those sound nice... I do have some sassafras here, almost forgot it Confused
The Rosewood I have is Nth Qld, which is very similar to N/G anyway. I was going for timbers that are readily accessible to the average Joe as well as some common garden variety ones just to get people thinking outside the square. I already have Pepperwood by its real name Prickly Ash.

If you can spare a piece of the Western Red Cedar, QLD Maple & Silkwood that would be great, the lure only needs a bit 80mm x 20mm sq.

I'll pm my address.

Cheers Brad

Chris, is that the Fiddlewood from the USA??? it is supposed to be heavy & hard timber??
Persimmon??? true persimmon is from the same family as ebony..and often used a substitute...might be worse than the mangrove to cave!!!!
Confused
are trying to kill my carving hand LOL

No worries Barry LOL

Been sanding since 4.30, they are looking good, but beggar me some of those harder timbers are tough to work. Be nice to do some softer timbers again.

Anthony, If you know anyone with Paulownia and Hoop Pine I wouldn't mind a small scraps.

Re the bibless....The guy who asked to have it made for his brother, quit before it was finished with no forwarding details.
I was only looking at it the other day, Think I might finish it and take it along to the expo anyway, someone might offer to swim it...hey Barry Wink

OHHH you meant HUON pine not HOOP pine ...I have heaps of HUON and have done one in the first installment.

I haven't been able to find anywhere locally to source Paulownia, have been told it is lovely to work.
Might have to take a drive up to Ceratodus with the bow saw Wink

Hi Guys, The wood samples keep coming ..... up to 35 species so far. Clap
I am thinking I will segregate them into timber for swimming lures and timber for special lures.
Some of the timbers are a bugger to shape and sand, you wouldn't want to do them in any quantities

Arrived home to find a parcel waiting from Cap'n Seaweed..yee haaa...the King Billy Pine he was donating to the species lure board.....or so I thought.

Upon opening the parcel I did find a few pieces of timber, a piece of Avocado (but a lump of END GRAIN Confused)
hmmm that will be interesting, a piece of King Billy Pine, a piece of Huon pine and this....

hmm a challenge??? Well I am always up for a good challenge. I look at clock...hmmm 5pm.....yeah I should have time before cooking dinner at 6.30..... Quickly Lureman..... to the Lure cave>>>>>>>>

Quickly grab the templates, mark out 3 bodies on the 3 timbers, off to the bandsaw and sander......
Cut and shaped by 5.15......sit down and mark out carving lines on 3 bodies...start carving the Sheoak first as it will take the longest I reckon......geez it's hard......carve...carve...carve, sand...(grab new piece of 80grit...sand...sand...bloomin' heck this stuff is hard...change to 120grit...sand...sand...sand, change to 240 grit...sand...sand....sand.......yeah that will do, look at clock Ermm  5.35pm
quickly carve and sand the Avo and King Billy.....5.55pm. Quick name and puff spray with clear to seal the pen....6pm...wife come home on way to trivia night...Hi honey smooch, yes I'd love a coffee thanks...
turn back to paint booth...spray clear on all 3 hang in hot box.....spray Avo again..by the time I go to hang it it needs another coat...bloody sponge this stuff Confused

anyway all done by 6.30. leave to bake while doing dinner. Back to the cave and here they are

Flame SheOak....Challenge won Clap

King Billy Pine, lovely stuff to carve as good as Huon, but grainier

Avocado, end grain which is a right bi%&h to carve LOL...had to sand the block to find the best grain..looks good but as you can see by the chip at tail...NO strength...would be nice to do a piece with the grain..its so light, almost balsa like.

Thanks Tony for the chunks and the the challenge!!!!
ohh and the Huon is being turned into a special semi nude NQ Tiger for your wall.Thumbs Up
Cheers Brad

Mick, tell my wrist and fingers that.....the Sheoak was tough, actually the dark resinous flecks are tough, the base timber was ok...seems a common thing with all the Acacia/Casuarina species, the Prickly Ash and Hairy Oak were the same but not as tough. I wouldn't recommend using it for a swimming lure unless you wanted it to sink fast, its heavy as well.

All I need now is the Western Red from Aaron and maybe a piece of Hoop Pine if anyone has a chunk lying around??

Nice work BradClapClapClapClap
Hoop in the lighter grades is basically identical to Kauri to work except that it tend's to 'fur' less when finishing. Most of my  older 16cm Wedgetails were made of hoop, It handles Mackerel teeth better than most timbers
A lot of the clear grade pine at hardware stores in northern nsw and southern QLD has peices of it of it, and it was used a lot in furniture through the 60's- 90's it has a distinct irregular thin white grain line and a lighter fleck than kauri and can be distinguished from radiata by the lack of pores and hard grain.

Cheers
Wal
