I am very sad to advise that Jack Erskine passed away yesterday.

Jack Erskine is a name that is synonymous with big game fishing both here in Australia and internationally.

Jack is well known for his many achievements in this regard, both as a fisherman and due to his expertise in the  area of fishing tackle. Jacks work has led to many revolutionary advancements that we continue to enjoy the benefits of.

Jack was well loved and respected and will be sorely missed

Cheers, Tony

For the love of Fishing Lures.

I heard about this sad event at lunch time, I only saw Erko from a distance at a tackle show, but know a few people that have been involved with Jack and they always held him in the highest regard.
I'd like to add my condolences as well to family and friends of a normal Aussie fisherman, who 'made it' on the world stage, and the industry will miss him enormously.

RIP.
Met Jack a few times, felt like I was meeting a rock star the 1st time. Bumped into him at the newsagents in Cairns quite a bit. He always made me feel that he knew me.(probably didnt recognise me} but he was always friendly and approachable. I will remember him best as the man who really cared about fishing and tackle. His achievments in tackle have influenced tackle manufacturing like the Beatles influanced rock and roll.
Great life Jack, well done.

I met Jack on many occasions over the decades, through the tackle industry. He always remembered me, and had time to talk, though it was often a good few years between. His life was not often smooth sailing business and family wise, but he always bounced back with the energy that earned him the nick name "Atom Ant". Small in stature, but a giant amongst his peers. The ranks grow thin.

Found this info on Jack. Thought it was worth posting. An incredible man to say the least. If there's a fishing heaven I hope he is sitting in the game chair.

Jack Erskine is possibly the most influential Australian ever involved in the tackle industry. For his life time of dedication to the sport he loves so dearly , he is held in high esteem by his peers, not only for his undisputed angling talents but for many contributions to the development and ever improving fishing tackle

He is one of the only Australians to be presented with the Ron Dempster Award for the contributions to the future of Sportfishing, one of the first inductees to the Cairns Black Marlin Hall of Fishing Fame in 2006 and in 2009 was inducted into the International Game Fishing Association Hall of Fame.

This video is the very reason why you need to consult with Jack for all your fishing needs;

http://www.jackerskine.com/profile.html

Born in Bourke, in western NSW, Jack grew up in Sydney. Apprenticed as a motor mechanic, he worked for BHP, before moving into the tackle trade in 1967, when he was 22 years old. His first job was with Arthur Chapman's Sport Store in Rockdale, Sydney.

Jack's first visit to Cairns was in 1968. Two years later he packed up his family and moved there, opening a tackle store with George Bransford, the legendary Cairns game boat skipper responsible for finding and catching the huge black marlin that put Cairns on the world's game fishing map.

Known for his expertise with fishing tackle, he is equally highly regarded for his extraordinary angling skills and is the only angler on record to capture eight black marlin on IGFA 2 kg (4.4 pounds) line class in one day, setting four consecutive world records at the time.

Jack is well known overseas having spent many years working and fishing in the United States. It was there that Jack met with Johnny Morris, owner of Bass Pro Shops, who invited Jack to assist him in establishing Offshore Angler in Florida. Their friendship continues to this day, as it does with any person fortunate enough to have met this gentleman of the sport and industry.

In 2006 the Cairns Black Marlin 40th Anniversary celebrations announced the names of five recipients of the inaugural Cairns Black Marlin Hall of Fame awards. Among them was Jack, who is credited with revolutionising big game fishing in respect to the equipment and techniques required to subdue giant billfish. Much of what went on in the 1960's, 1970's, and 1980's at Cairns in relation to tackle development can be directly attributed to Jack.

But the gongs got bigger in 2009 when Jack was inducted into the International Game Fishing Association Hall of Fame. This is a rare honour given that despite several decades of existence, just 69 anglers have been presented with this prestigious award.

And why not? After all, for more than 30 years, the name Jack Erskine has been synonymous with the cutting edge of tackle innovation and development. Few Australian anglers command the degree of respect and authority, as does this Cairns-based tackle guru.

Jack's technical savvy isn't been lost on the tackle industry. When he talks - and the words come out at a hundred kilometres an hour - industry captains listen.

But for all his technical wizardry, Jack is primarily an angler: one of our finest light tackle specialists. A founder member of the Australian National Sportfishing Association, he has participated in all forms of fresh and salt-water fishing, nationally and internationally, for more than 40 years. Whether it's billfish on fly off Cairns, barramundi at Tinaroo or tarpon in Costa Rica, he's done most of it.

And, if tournament credits mean anything, then he has a record of fishing in teams that have either placed first or in the first three places in over 45 tournaments; as well, he is one of only three Australian light tackle anglers ever invited to fish the prestigious Masters Tournament conducted by the Sailfish Club of South Florida.

In the early 1970s Jack pioneered the successful introduction of heavy duty spinning tackle for casting live baits (pitch baiting) to sailfish and small marlin, and he now has over 300 captures of billfish to his credit. Not a bad effort for a method of fishing that some doubting Thomas's said couldn't be done, going so far as to unkindly label it 'stunt fishing'. These days the use of spinning tackle for both live baiting and trolling for the smaller species of billfish is popular around the globe.

I was not fortunate to meet Jack in person but did converse many times with him over the phone when ordering drag washers and reel grease for my buisness, He always volunteered a tip or two about repairing and servicing what ever particular reel i was doing at the time and i learnt alot from these calls.
He was a thorough gentleman and will be greately missed.

Thanks for the 'Bio' ALastair, down here we have heard a lot about him and knew some of his 'exploits', but this puts it all in perspective, sounds like a 'been there and done that guy' who just kept being there and doing that. He leaves a hole that will take a lot of filling, not only here but world wide.
Best wishes to his family.

Very sad to hear of Jack's passing, I think Jack was only about 66yrs. way too young, a great loss.
I was fortunate to meet Jack on the Sth. Alligator R., N.T. in the mid 80's, when he was introduced to me by Col Cordingley. Col became one of Jack's Allstar's, along with others including our own Cranky. I know Barry will be mourning a good friend.
Regards, Tony.

It looks like Jack's funeral is this Friday at 2pm in Cairns.I am trying to put together a little remembrance token for Jack to hopefully make folks all over Australia think of him and his exploits.
Some of our Lurelover friends may be able to help with this.
I would like every staff member of every Tackle Shop in Australia to wear a black arm band this coming Friday.
Maybe some of you guys out there could help with this if you know some of the Shop Managements.
I have arranged for an email to be sent through AFTA out to all the Shops they have on their records.
It would be fantastic to do this for Jack and hopefully participation will be forthcoming.
It is only a small gesture but something I am sure the Family will remember forever and also myself.
