I had a phonecall today from Barry Cross(Captain Cranky) who visited Vic this morning for some precious time with a friend. Vic passed away quietly at 11.45am today aged 86.
Born 14th August 1928-14th January 2015. He packed a lot of adventure in the years between.
RIP Vic.

Another sad day in the annals of Australian Angling. A true gentleman and dare I say legend has passed.

I offer best wishes and thoughts to those close and not so close but who were influenced by Vic and his love of angling.

Truly a sad day , but what a life well lived.

One of the very few fishermen/writers who wrote and talked of fishing with humility , genuine passion , and an unhindered desire to share his vast knowledge.

My condolences to his family.

Rest in peace Vic.

Anthony.

FYI for the crafty fish deceivers that see this site.

Vic requested no funeral, - he wants his ashes sprinkled around his beloved Hinchinbrook Island. Anyone lucky enough to live locally or who can get there should take the tip. It might well be worth chucking out one of your favourite lures shortly after ! "Vicberley" would surely turn the finickiest of fish on the tooth. - and Vic would have laughed at the concept (if not demanded it happen ! ).

Vic as many would know was never married so his only family are his 3 remaining younger sisters and their offspring (and their offspring ). It would not be talking out of school to say Vic. saw his close friends and fishing "brothers" as de facto family. Vic moved away from his birthplace and family base in Bellingen NSW  to Cardwell Nth Qld (paradise to paradise some would say !) That did leave him isolated from his family - especially so in the context of the time. Todays technology makes the tyranny of distance much less of a burden or an obstruction but the world was a different place nearly 50 years ago in the mid 60’s when he struck out for Cardwell which was decidedly isolated then.( Now known to many by virtue of the cyclone that decimated the place in 2011 via Cyclone Yasi.)  North Queensland was his home but most of Australia and indeed various overseas countries were his canvas - and he made friends all over in similar circumstances .

Vic made so many of his friends including lifelong ones through fishing. In many ways they became family to him . Many fishos can probably relate,  having made friends ,many becoming long term ones where their only link was being at the same place at the same time at , going to or from a boat or the rocks ,beaches or maybe an estuary that deserved a look and a maybe a speculative or determined throw to see if anything stirred  below the surface .

cheers

Steve

(one of Vics nephews)

My dear Friend.
It was very sad to see you go the other day.
Both you and Jack Erskine were the whole reason I moved north so many years ago.
When I was a young fellow living in Coff's and fishing all around including the Bellinger I wish I had of met you then but it was to be much later in my life and through your writings I gained a great appreciation of life and the Outdoors.
I still remember the first time Jack introduced me to you in the shop on the Waterfront in Cairns.
I was very delighted and humbled and I think at the time did not know what to say to you.
You will be sadly missed by everyone and I thank you for your precious time and invaluable knowledge you gave to me over many years.
The pics enclosed were at your house and I remember you and Laurie Woodbridge chatting away about stuff, just stuff.
You were both having a great time until I suggested a casting comp between you two friends.
Then you both got serious.
A few laughs were had and Vic finally outcast Wood for the bragging rights of champion.A great day it was.
RIP Vic

Here is a Head's up of Vic's Wake and spreading of the Ashes.
Friday 30th Jan anyone interested in bringing a boat to Cardwell needs to be at Ramsay Bay at 10am for the Ashes ceremony.
Sat 31st Jan will be a Wake at the Cardwell Sportfishing Club at a time to be advised.
Anyone interested is welcome to turn up either or both days.
Regards Barry
