Anyone care to make a stab at the value of an Eric Moller?
Can't remember seeing one on eBay recently and waiting with bated breath.
I reckon it will come from someone who doesn't know what they've got, as most of us
would consider it their favourite brand of the whole lot and would never sell. There
haven't been any more of these made for a while seeing he passed away way back in 1981.
The recent surveys have seemed to concentrate on Murray Cod lures for some reason and
they only started later than that.
Cheers,Jim

Jim, I wish i had access to my old database, but it's locked inside a harddrive that died, and I have had a quote to retrieve it that I can afford.
However the supply of Moller,s has declined of late so I tend to think that more are being traded off line. darbs |

At the other end of the scale from that one that sold last year for $520 - there were 2 others earlier this year on ebay that I picked up for about $50 each (wish that would happen more often!) I agree that most of the Mollers tend to be offline deals. In my experience most are somewhere between $200 to $500 depending on condition and rarity, although I am aware of a unique one that sold privately recently for $900 |

Gotta get better at this game.
Definitely never saw those two at $50 each (Were they Buy it Now or were they listed away from Vintage and
Collectable which is all I look at?) and think I squibbed out on the $520 nudie.
Cheers,Jim
Tony probably won't give away secrets on how to find $50 Mollers.

I bought the little nude last year. It came with a lot of information, never been used and in mint condition. The owner knew it was a 1976 model and had bought it and one other through the mail from Eric.
If you want to buy one, I don't have one for sale, $300 is mates rates. That's for good condition Mollers, not rough ones. I think a good Tiger would go higher. Well put it this way, if I seen it and it went for under $300, then that means I won it and you all failed to place a bid, ha ha ha, losers.

I will go check on the plaque today, if I get time.
I'll drop it into the framing shop on the way home, if not it'll take me another four weeks to get back there. Good to see people seeing the value in Eric's work. Must admit when I first started collecting them I thought I was alone, Tony fixed that.

There's no secret Jim - I just got very lucky that day Actually I think they were listed as "Old Timber Lures" or something like that, so that certainly helped! Sadly they are the only 2 that I have got for anywhere near that price, and yes they were in Vintage and Collectable (I think there was some big sports game on or something so I had ebay pretty much to myself that day - was great fun!) |

How time's are a changing You fella's would have seen the low price the 3 Mollers went for on Evil Bay , a very collectable lure or used to be . I recall when I first started collecting lures I offered a old mate 5 Hundo for one of his tigers and I got knocked back . Now you can snap one up for under $ 150 I don't understand maybe there isn't any spare money these days anyway someones loss is another persons gain .Cheers Sticko

Still desirable lures but a area for the expert. If the pictures were done well enough to say it was definitely a Moller I think the number of people bidding and price would be higher.

The 3 last week were cheap if genuine Mollers although the one with the green stripes looked like an amateur owner had "improved" it with gloss house paint.
The $475 one.Was that the one with the clear gloss finish? I've only seen gloss on his nudes prior to that. Interesting! Cheers,Jim

G`day, I have three of these lures. One was mint and bought it to support the forum. $ 420
One was a mint nude $ 300 ( not many nudes around) and a used faded tiger off ebay for $ 104. ( Faded and worn not chewed.) Love them all. Awesome lures. Hope this helps. cheers Chris |

Some good points here, Eric's lures have been copied since the early 70's, so picking the genuine article without provenance is getting harder. I've seen many from Eric's own tacklebox and they are different with respect to paint, (enamels) and how this was applied in different ways. Bruce (Eric's grandson), told me as a teenager on school holidays, he'd help Eric in many of the lure making processes, including the painting, does this make those from 1974 onwards hybrids? Going by the three on ebay just recently, I feel from pictures supplied they were genuine. I also was waiting for the bidding to ramp up and was surprised by the lack of interest. Maybe people are becoming more suspicious of copies? Anyway I managed to secure the green painted one, fairly confident it's genuine, I'll be presenting it to Bruce as a gift, if he tells me it's a fake I'll be mortified .

Are the "nude" ones worth more than a yellow tiger version ?
I have a couple I may put on ebay and wonder what they are worth. They will be buy it now price so I don't have to worry about bidding wars. Mine are genuine as they were given to me by the man himself 35 plus years ago. |

It all depends on condition and who is in the market at the time, two nudes recently sold for just under, and just over $200. Does buy it now incur the 9% ebay grab? If it does, you would be better off selling them on this website mate.

It would appear that the Moller bubble has well and truly burst after hearing that a bunch of mint lures were purchased recently for only $150 each. Sign of the times ?

I think it was more the case that the seller had 19 lures that he wanted to sell on the day. That will always result in a lower price regardless of the lure type.

Interesting to see Jim Allen (who started Compleat Angler in Melbourne) selling 3 of these which he had
purchased via Vic McCristal. The Tiger made a bit over $300 and the Chin Minnows (Nilsmaster type) a bit over $200 each.

Thanks for the 'heads-up' Jim, wondering what they'd fetch. That Tiger was a beaut, tempted myself.
Also be nice to know what that mint Boomer went for, last I looked was at $600 with 6hrs. to go. Regards, Seaweed.

It was explained to me by an avid collector of everything (including lures which he knew nothing about) that collecting is a generational thing, most collectors being in their 40's or 50's, having paid for a house and bought up the kids and finally having a little spare coin
Like to purchase what they could not afford as a young bloke. I don't remember bell brooks and others but remember boomers and timber stumpys on the shelf, guess what I want to buy now? as for mollers I reckon anyone with a passion for historic Aussie lures would want one, myself included, because they all come with the story of a great Aussie bloke that loved to make lures and fish, the price? How bad do you want it? |

Tony I would have to agree with you 100%....me I am the same age as you & I remember what was around back then & would like them now...& the top of my list is an Elle macpherson, man even with that can of TAB.....Grrrrrrr.....
If you want some thing bad enough you will pay the price....look how many collectors have Stummies 1-9...paid 300-500 each.....I know some collectors that would pay $2000 for a number 10....

I liked Gizzardshad's point explaining why some things become almost cult collectables. Mollers and Ken Hendry Seekers are examples of crudely made "folk art" lures that are highly sought after. They caught fish and the makers were highly publicised as your good old battling Aussie bloke without an enemy in the world. Peter Newell highly publicised both for designs and as a "good bloke". Wooden Stumpies and Boomerangs as highly successful and hard to find because they were so good.
There are lots of others however that don't come into the "cult" class even though just as well made as any of the previous. Either they never got as much publicity or the wrong type in some cases. I personally love collecting lures from the 1920s to the 1970s just because I don't suffer the high priced competition from all the metal bibbed wood body diver collectors and I expect that in 50 years my grandkids will benefit.

My name is Peter Munt
Eric Moller taught me the art of hand carving lures. Eric, when he found that age had caught up to him asked me and supported him and fill his orders for lures. which I did. I produced some 1500 to 2000 lures which were exact copies of Eric's which filled his orders, please pass on the truth |

Hi Peter I just picked this one up which I think is one of yours. I would also like to know what the tie up was with you and Attack Lures. The paint is so similar on some lures.

Hi yes the lure is one of mine.
The owner of Attavk lures was Darrell O'Connell. He purchased a tackle shop on the way into Bribie Island. His step father was Barry Neat, a very good friend of mine and my partner in a lure copy lathe. Generally I made patterns for the lathe, Barry turned out the lures glued in bibs and eyelets and ubdercoated them, I painted the lures, test swum them and marketed them. It was some years later after our lathe was made(by a very good friend of Barry's and mine) and after many thousands of lures were made on our (Barry's and mine) lathe that Darryl purchased the Tackle shop . The majority of Attack lures are based on my patterns that had previously been ( and we're still being used). I also made the pattern for the Attack "Gar" and initially painted a few hundred lures to "get them going", Following this Darryl (or someone else) basically copied my paintwork. We ( Barry and I)also turned out lures for Greg Mundt(an ex friend of mine but no relation). Barry was a pensioner and took on producing lures for Attack, Greg Munt and LTL lures all with serious input from me. Hope this helps Peter M |

This is going to open a can of worms for many who think they own genuine Eric made Moller's. They'll all be rushing off to compare the paint jobs .
